   Extreme Weather / Emergency Preparedness

Much of the potential damaging consequences relating to climate change are associated with
extreme weather events. Increase in localized natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornados,
mudslides, ice storms, flash floods and forest fires.
Understand your local environment and prepare for disaster.

Find Out What Can Happen
1.  Contact local emergency organizations concerning possible disasters in your area.
2.  Learn disaster plans at work, school and daycare.
3.  Find out about animal care options. They may not be welcome in shelters.
4.  Take first aid, CPR and community disaster courses.

Create a Disaster Plan
1.  Discuss with family possible disasters in your area and what to do.
2.  Choose 2 places for family to meet. Outside house if everyone is home and a public
familiar place if everyone cant get home.
3.  Ask an out of state family member or friend to be a "Contact Person". If family members
become  seperated it may be easier to relay information through this contact person.
4.  Test and recharge fire extinguishers. Add new bateries to smoke detectors.
5.  Help children remember phone numbers, address and meeting places.
     Carry contact and health information.

6.  Know how to shut off gas and electricity. Stay out of water to avoid shock .

You should be prepared to live without assistance for a minimum of 3 days. Every family
should have a personalized waterproof self contained 72 hour kit. These kits should be
located near house exit. Keepa light source on top of the kits. Keep matches, personal
documents, extra clothingand contact list in plastic to keep dry. Remember that babies,
the elderly and the young will require special items for health reasons. Don't forget about
being comfortable mentally so include stress reducing items. The vehicle should be
stocked with safety and comfort items and kept it more than half full always.
